Former Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra dies after prolonged illness

Former Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra has died at the age of 82 after a long illness in Delhi. He was ill for a long time. He was undergoing treatment in a Delhi hospital. He was the Chief Minister of Bihar three times.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has deeply mourned the death of former Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra. He has declared three days of mourning in the state. Mishra will be given a final farewell with full state honors. At the same time, Union Minister Giriraj Singh while paying tribute to Mishra via Twitter wrote, ‘Former Chief Minister of Bihar, Shri Jagannath Mishra has passed away. May his soul rest in peace. ‘ 

Mishra suffered from cancer and other diseases. In January 2018, he was convicted and sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment in the case of illegal withdrawal from Chaibasa treasury linked to the fodder scam. Mishra, once a strong leader of the Congress, had learned the lesson of politics from his elder brother Lalit Narayan Mishra.

Mishra started his career as a professor. He then became a professor of economics at the University of Bihar. He was interested in politics since childhood. His elder brother Lalit Narayan Mishra was in politics and has held the responsibility of Railway Minister. Jagannath learned politics from him. 

Mishra joined the Congress Party while teaching the students. After this, he took command of the state three times. First from 1975 to 1977, the second time from 1980 to 1983 and the third time from 1989 to 1990. He also held the responsibility of Union Cabinet Minister in the mid-1990s. He is known as the elder leader of Bihar.

Jagannath Mishra was the last Chief Minister of Congress in Bihar. After them, the party has failed to retain the power of the state. After Lalu Prasad Yadav became the Chief Minister of the state in 1990. After this, the Congress has failed to form a government in its own state for the last 30 years. Nitish Kumar has been in charge of the state for nearly 15 years.
